Most configuration vulnerabilities are described as missing input validation. CVE-2026-74041 is better described as inconsistent validation. Wazuh Manager 4.14.3 to 4.14.7 validates remote commands in ossec.conf, and a separate component, wazuh-logcollector, later interprets the same file. The two do not treat letter case the same way.
The result, per INCIBE-CERT advisory INCIBE-2026-753 published 16 October 2026, is that an authenticated holder of manager:update_config can place a LOG_FORMAT directive written in upper case into the configuration, avoid the remote command check, and obtain execution as root on reload. The severity rating is critical.
The mechanics of a case-sensitive bypass
A validator that looks for one spelling of a directive, and a consumer that accepts another, creates asymmetric knowledge. Defensive tooling sees a string it does not recognise as dangerous. The interpreter sees a directive it recognises perfectly well.
Here the asymmetry is case. Upper-case LOG_FORMAT passes the validation stage without the remote command filter being applied, yet remains functional for wazuh-logcollector. The advisory names the validator, the component, the directive and the resulting privilege level, which is more detail than many advisories offer.
The bug class is familiar from other ecosystems: filter lists that match only lower-case keywords, path checks that miss alternate spellings, content-type validation that inspects a header the consuming library ignores. The defensive lesson generalises beyond Wazuh: when two pieces of code read the same input, they must share one parser or one normalisation step.
Requirements an attacker must meet
Exploitation is gated by authentication and authorisation rather than by network position. The advisory specifies an authenticated user with the manager:update_config permission. Such a user can already modify configuration, so the vulnerability is a privilege escalation inside the manager's trust boundary rather than an unauthenticated entry point.
The second gate is the reload. A changed configuration takes effect when the service reloads. Operational practice usually supplies that event.
The advisory contains no public step-by-step exploitation detail, and none is reproduced here.
Impact on a monitoring platform
Wazuh Manager is the control point for a fleet. It receives agent data, manages rule sets, stores alerts and issues active-response actions. Root on that host places the integrity of the collected evidence and the behaviour of enrolled agents in question.
The advisory documents root command execution. It does not document observed attacker activity, and the exploitation status recorded at publication is no.
Affected products and versions
Wazuh Manager, versions 4.14.3 and later but earlier than 4.14.8. CVE-2026-74041. INCIBE importance 5, critical. Reporters namd0ng and vikman90. Reference title in the advisory: "Wazuh 4.14.3 before 4.14.8 Remote Command Validation Bypass via Case Mismatch".
Remediation and review
Upgrade to 4.14.8 or later. That is the recommended and documented solution.
Alongside the upgrade, three reviews are worth running.
Recount who holds
manager:update_configand whether full manager administration is required for every holder.Inspect
ossec.confforLOG_FORMATentries and for directives whose casing differs from documented examples. Correlation with change history helps distinguish intentional entries from anomalies.Confirm reload procedures are audited, so an unexpected restart leaves a record.
These steps reduce exposure and improve detection. They do not close the parsing gap, because the gap lives in the shipped code.
Observed exposure
A ZoomEye search for app="Wazuh" matched 18031 assets when the query was run for this article. vul.cve="CVE-2026-74041" matched zero. A product fingerprint count is a population estimate of Wazuh-labelled services, not a vulnerability count, and a zero CVE filter count reflects what the platform has indexed and tagged.
